Beyond the Bin Game

Waste isn’t rubbish – it’s a resource

Materials like glass, plastic, paper, metal and food scraps can all become new products when recovered. By keeping resources in circulation we reduce our reliance on natural resources, save energy and water, cut greenhouse gas emissions – and create local jobs.

NAWMA operates a Material Recovery Facility (MRF, pronounced ‘murf’) – a specialised facility which sorts the materials in the yellow bin after they are collected by the trucks. This is a critical step to ensure what you put into your kerbside yellow-lid bin gets turned into new products – i.e. recycled!

Play the Beyond the Bin game to learn more about what happens to the material you put into your bins at home and why binning it right matters!

Please note: This game is currently playable on desktop and laptop computers only.

School resources

The following lesson plans have been designed introduce students to the journey of household waste and recycling, encouraging them to explore what belongs in each kerbside bin and why using our bins correctly matters.

Through discussion, the Beyond the Bin game and a short reflection task, students learn that our everyday choices about waste have environmental and social impacts.

These Lesson Plans (for Years 3-4 and 5-6) include curriculum links and work sheets.
